If you want to vacation like a local, there’s one thing that you should learn: The Carolina Shag. This regional dance, which is the official dance of South Carolina, is a staple of the culture around The Grand Strand and in North Carolina. During your next getaway to North Myrtle Beach, why not stop by one of the local dance halls, beach clubs, or North Myrtle Beach shagging events to practice your moves? Learn everything you need to know about this time-honored tradition and how you can partake!
Learn to Dance the Carolina Shag
Even if you have two left feet, you can learn how to dance the Carolina shag. The first thing to understand is learning how to count “one-and-two, three-and-four, five-six.” Repeat this pattern until you know the eight-beat rhythm. There are eight shag dance steps that correspond to each beat. The only catch is that the “one-and-two” and “three-and-four” steps should take about as much time to complete as the “five-and-six” steps do. There are some great videos available online that demonstrate the Carolina shag. Or, if you learn better by doing, you can head to one of the local beach clubs or events to watch how the experts do it!
Attend a North Myrtle Beach Shag Event
If you’re interested in seeing the best of the best compete, attend the National Shag Dance Championships. It started in Myrtle Beach in 1984, and the finals are in March. Even if you’re not participating, you’ll enjoy watching the dancers show their stuff.
Society of Stranders also hosts some quality events. This club is all about embracing beach music and the dance, as well as the lifestyle that the Carolina shag represents. The Spring Safari and Fall Migration are two events that each give visitors and locals the chance to dance, celebrate, and have a fun time.
Another great organization is the O.D. Shag Club. They offer lessons (which you can read about below) as well as hold a winter and a summer workshop. Between the O.D. Shag Club and Society of Stranders, there’s an event for each season!
Visit a Local Dance Club
If you aren’t in town for one of these events, you can always head to Fat Harold’s Beach Club. On Mondays and Tuesdays, this North Myrtle Beach institution hosts shag lessons starting at 7:00 p.m. You can grab a drink from the bar, and then head to the dance floor to learn the Carolina Shag with the locals and visitors. Fat Harold’s happens to also be the venue for the many great Spring Safari events!
