The Exhibits at the Franklin G. Burroughs-Chapin Art Museum
Along with rotating exhibitions, the Franklin G. Burroughs-Chapin Art Museum owns four incredible permanent collections. The first is The Waccamaw Arts & Crafts Guild Collection, which was created by local artists dedicated to displaying works by artists of the region. This collection was the museum’s first gift of art and includes award-winning pieces.
The next permanent display is The Bishop Collection of Antique Maps & Historic Prints, which includes 15 maps. These historic documents range from 1606 to the mid-19th century, which was deemed the golden age of cartography. The collection also features 15 complementary historical prints.
The Barbara Burgess and John Dinkelspiel Collection of Southern Art is the third collection and includes 21 works by Jonathan Green and other Southern artists. The mediums range from paintings to photographs to sculpture. This is definitely the most varied of the collection.
The final permanent collection is The Museum Collection of Gifts and Purchases, which is composed of the gifts and individual pieces that the museum has acquired over time.
Since the early 2000s, the Franklin G. Burroughs-Chapin Art Museum has been hosting free Community Family Days. These events are catered to visitors of all ages and celebrate the diversity of culture found along the Grand Strand. There is food, music, dance, performances, crafts, lectures, vendors, and educational displays. Everything is donated and sponsored by businesses dedicated to giving back to and celebrating the community. A couple of the Community Family Days include Chinese New Year, Dia de los Muertos, and Gullah Day.
The museum also offers summer camps for kids: one for ages 5-7 and another for ages 8-12. The camps last three days, running a couple hours each day. These camps are incredibly popular among kids and you’ll love having a couple of hours to yourself!
