Brookgreen Gardens is an award-winning sculpture garden and wildlife preserve that’s one of the most popular attractions in South Carolina. Founded in 1931, the unique 9,100-acre property offers a wide variety of tours, programs, and activities for all ages. Brookgreen also features new exhibitions and special events each season. The next time you visit the Myrtle Beach area, book your stay with Seaside Vacations and find out what makes Brookgreen Gardens so special.
What You’ll See at Brookgreen Gardens
Brookgreen’s famous butterfly-shaped sculpture garden was designed in 1931 by Anna Hyatt and features the largest collection of American figurative sculpture in the country. Here, visitors can admire over 1,400 works by 350 renowned artists and even attend sculpture workshops taught by nationally known sculptors. The four wings of the sculpture garden’s butterfly also feature a number of smaller gardens with 300-year-old live oak trees, flowers, vines, and shrubs, as well as a garden room for children.
Brookgreen Gardens has three additional gardens departed from the butterfly design, including the Palmetto Garden, the Fountain of the Muses Garden, and the Labyrinth. Head to their website to learn more about the spectacular seasonal blooms found in each garden.
The Native Wildlife Zoo at Brookgreen Gardens is the only zoo accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums on the coast of North and South Carolina. Guests can admire a variety of native animal species including birds, alligators, river otters, and foxes. There are also many domestic animals like chickens, horses, cows, sheep, and goats. All of the native animals in the zoo were either bred and raised in captivity or have sustained a major injury and therefore could not survive in the wild.
Activities & Events
Each day, guests can enjoy boat rides, history excursions, animal meet-and-greets, and much more at Brookgreen Gardens. In addition to daily tours and programs, the facility hosts a number of annual events that attract thousands of attendees. One of the most popular is the Night of a Thousand Candles. Each December, this spectacular festival of lights dazzles guests with 5,500 hand-lit candles and a ceremonial tree lighting. It’s the perfect way to ring in the holiday season!
